ALANA BRUCE
How
did you get your start in the music industry?
I began
gigging in Melbourne in 2005 playing in a funk band and then I started my own
project.
Best part of the job?
Making
people happy with music. Also, I love performing with wonderful musicians and
the learning that comes with playing with them
Worst part
of the job?
Venue bookers, well not all of them, but some
of them make things a bit difficult...hhhhrrrrmmmmm!
Any
interesting experiences you can share?
I spent some time
in India a few years ago learning to play the sitar. It was a fascinating experience,
trying to get my head around new musical structures and attempting to ignore the
pain in my fingers from holding down such tough strings.
Favourite
CD of all time and why?
'Grace' by Jeff Buckley. It is
not merely a collection of 10 songs but a beautiful and powerful musical journey.
This album changed my life.
Tell us about the best live
show that you ever saw?
Ben Folds at Melbourne's Forum
in 2005. It was moving, exciting and unbelievably fun, and he got the audience
to sing harmonies for several of his songs and it sounded fantastic.
Favourite
bars/clubs/pubs to hang out in?
I love Newtown, so anywhere
there is good for me.
Take us through a typical "day
in the life of Alana Bruce".
I like to get up early
in the morning, so in this sense I'm not a real musician, go for a run, eat a
huge breakfast, and then fly around trying to do as many things as I can in a
day before I completely tire myself out and fall asleep again.
What
advice would you give to someone looking at getting involved in the music industry?
Do
it! And give it a real go! And when you are performing, play FOR your audience
and not just for yourself. If you engage with people and make it enjoyable for
them, they will want to come see you and support your music.
Any
news or final comments?
Swine flu - not as scary as the
papers make it out to be. Oh, and come along to the launch of my debut album 'Degrees
of Freedom' at the Vanguard on Thursday July 9th!
