"A glimpse into another world that is warm, sensuous and vital."
- The Sunday Times
In recent years, Argentina has been experiencing
an extraordinary rebirth of its main musical tradition - the Tango. For many in
the Rio de la Plata, the Tango is a way of life. 'Café de Los Maestros'
joyously documents the gathering of the greatest living legends of this formidable
musical genre.
In this insightful film, these legendary men and women,
ranging from 70 to 95 years old, reveal to us some of the mysteries and essence
of this highly emotive music. Acclaimed musician, producer and composer Gustavo
Santaolalla (winner of two Academy Awards® - Best Original Score for both
'Babel' and 'Brokeback Mountain') leads the journey to bring these unique "maestros"
together.
We see Leopoldo Federico standing once more in front of his band,
Lágrima Ríos travelling across the Río de la Plata to find
her guitarist Aníbal Arias, and we witness the reunion of the powerful
partnership of José Libertella and Luis Stazo. These are just a handful
of the tango masters showcased by this impressive tour de force - artists who
are experts at displaying the authentic, human elements of the Tango. While some
are as famous in Argentina as international celebrities, others have chosen to
remain well-kept secrets.
Reconstructing historical arrangements and recording
unpublished material for the first time, their collaboration culminates with a
grand performance of Tango music and dance at Buenos Aires' famous Colon Theatre.
In
the tradition of 'Buena Vista Social Club' and the very best world music documentaries,
you'll find yourself swept up by the joy, the passion, the rhythm and the culture
of this wonderful piece - please take a seat at the 'Café de Los Maestros'.
