Cherry Blossom Bar

Cherry Blossom Bar

Sydneysiders will get a taste of Tokyo at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA) from Friday 28 October. Hot on the heels of the Grayson Perry-inspired Gin Garden and in the spirit of summer, the MCA will open a pop-up Cherry Blossom Bar. The Cherry Blossom Bar is inspired by the Sydney International Art Series exhibition Tatsuo Miyajima: Connect with Everything (3 November 2016 – 5 March 2017). The bar is the destination to enjoy breezy summer evenings with long cool drinks and panoramic views across Sydney Harbour.

Tatsuo Miyajima is one of Japan’s leading contemporary artists, known for his immersive and technologically-driven sculptures and installations. This Sydney-exclusive exhibition will be his first major survey exhibition in the Southern Hemisphere, encompassing key works from the beginnings of his career to the present.

From Friday 28 October 2016, the Cherry Blossom Bar will open to the public, offering MCA visitors a selection of Japanese saké, whisky and beers alongside locally sourced Australian favourites catering to all tastes. QT Hotel Sydney mixologist Jared Thibault has shared his expertise to deliver a signature cocktail especially for the pop-up bar each month. Infused with Japanese flavours the first cocktail is the Nashi Kabukin Highball made with Kakubin whisky, Nashi pear with citrus, ginger and lemongrass.

In a unique collaboration with the MCA, Archie Rose Distillery is creating a tailored gin designed to blend perfectly with saké, for a truly decadent summer cocktail.

MCA Catering Partner, Culinary Edge, has developed a Cherry Blossom Bar menu featuring Izakaya-style share plates featuring edamame, karaage, gyoza and the ultimate bento box.

The Cherry Blossom Bar offers visitors an extended exhibition experience. It aims to deepen engagement with audiences familiar to contemporary art, and possibly spark the curiosity of those who are new to it.

Earlier this year the MCA Cafe launched a Korean menu to coincide with New Romance: art and the posthuman – an exhibition bringing together 18 contemporary artists from Australia and Korea. Last summer, the MCA presented the hugely successful Gin Garden, which became a summer hot spot alongside the Grayson Perry: My Pretty Little Art Career exhibition.

From Friday 28 October 2016 until 5 March 2017, the Cherry Blossom Bar is open Thursday to Friday from 4pm until late, and Saturday to Sunday from 12 noon. Ages 18+

PRIVATE HIRE ENQUIRIES
The Cherry Blossom Bar is also available for private hire and is the perfect setting for summer entertaining.
