CHRISTA HUGHES
How
did you get your start in the music industry?
I was drawn
to music by listening to my Dad's record collection. Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey,
Jelly Roll Morton, Memphis Slim, Robert Johnston and Billie Holiday were on high
rotation in my bedroom. My first professional engagement was singing with my Dad
(jazz pianist Dick Hughes).
Best part of the job?
Best
part of my job is the hours, or is it the frocks?
Worst
part of the job?
Worst part of my job is removing very
well glued false eye lashes. (If I don't, I wake up the next day with very scary
caterpillars on my face and pillow).
Any interesting experiences
you can share?
Plenty! Where to start.... I have been proposed
to by Robbie Williams, I have stolen Gene Simmons' groupies, I have been banned
by University "feminists" yet was invited to sing at Germaine Greer's
most recent birthday bash. I have played Broadway, I have sung several seasons
at the Opera House and I have performed at the Hellfire Club. I have died (in
a movie) being eaten by sharks in Sydney Harbour in the middle of the night in
the middle of winter whilst singing an aria. I have been flown to Paris to gargle
with Jean Paul Gaultier.
Favourite CD of all time and why?
I
couldn't honestly say I have an all time fave. Depends on my mood and the day.
Lately I have been listening to and loving C.W. Stoneking's "Jungle Blues".
I need at least one fix a week of Duke Ellington. I just finished recording an
album with my Dad and it sounds beautiful.
Tell us about
the best live show that you ever saw?
Prince. I think I
levitated during his performance and I couldn't sleep for days. He has written
my favourite songs to jive to, he plays THAT guitar like no one else, he sings
so damn fine, he spins and prances in those high heels and he is funny! Yes, Princes'
between song banter was truly funny. Everyone left that concert IN LOVE with that
crazy genius.
Favourite bars/clubs/pubs to hang out in?
Best
Sydney pub: the East Sydney. Great tunes, great look, great feel, great staff,
no pokies...GREAT!
Take us through a typical "day in
the life of Christa Hughes".
There is no typical day.
I do, however, go mad if I don't get my ocean swim in, especially in winter when
no one else is at the beach.
What advice would you give
to someone looking at getting involved in the music industry?
Rack
Off, Gig's Mine! No, seriously, break a leg Darling! Kisses
Any
news or final comments?
My favourite show biz quote. I
overheard this when the staff at the now defunct music venue, the Harbourside
Brasserie, were trying to pacify an annoyed "Lucky Johnston". He used
to play keys for Sly and the Family Stone. Staff : "We are so sorry about
the muck up, can we get you anything?" Lucky : "I wanna steak, I want
some coke and I want some pussy. In that order!"
