How did
you get your start in the music industry?
By listening
to lots of great music and hours and hours in the bedroom.
Best
part of the job?
Touring - I get to see amazing places.
Worst
part of the job?
Touring (!) - being away from home.
Any
interesting experiences you can share?
Touring America
- I put on 5kg as I felt obliged to try all the different fast food franchises.
Touring Europe/UK - I lost 5kg as I couldn't afford to buy any food or alcohol.
Favourite
album of all time and why?
'Blood Sugar Sex Magik' by Red
Hot Chilli Peppers because 20 years later, it still inspires me to want to play
all the instruments - it's just got so much groove. Every aspect of it - whether
it's the production, drum sounds, smooth grooves of flea
it's just a timeless
piece.
Tell us about the best live show that you ever saw?
That's
just too hard to answer. I could give you a couple. One would be Infectious Grooves,
one of my all time favourite bands and I got a chance to get up on stage and sing
a song with them. Seeing a local artist called iOTA in Sydney. I also loved the
Audioslave concert back a few years ago. Muse was also good. The Tea Party on
the 'Transmission' album was just amazing. Dallas Frasca also the other night
was also amazing. I also broke into the Hordern Pavilion when I was 7 years old
and saw KISS - that was definitely one I remember! Ok, that's more than a couple
but
I gotta stop cos I could keep going with at least another 10 more.
Favourite
bars/clubs/pubs to hang out in?
Espy Melbourne St Kilda.
Take us through a typical "day in the life of Claude
Hay ".
If I'm not playing, I am spending hours and
hours pulling apart my pedals and gear in ways that I think would make it smaller
and better, or thinking of a new guitar I want to build
A
lot of people are creating their own sounds via their PCs these days. What kind
of set up do you use?
I record on Sonar 6 (PC) but all
my stuff is done live on external hardware. I use so much outboard gear it's starting
to drive me crazy! However, I did hear of a new product called Musebox which is
a device that you can run all your favourite VST plug ins into which is strong
and reliable where you don't have to worry about bringing a PC for live. Gotta
research that one a bit more
What advice would you
give to someone looking at getting involved in the music industry?
As
long as you're doing it for the right reasons, you can't go wrong. As soon as
you take it too seriously, it can wither you away a bit.
Any
news or final comments?
I'm going on tour in March/April
to promote my new single "How Can You Live With Yourself". It's about
how printers always seem to miraculously break down straight after warranty and
when you really REALLY need it to work to meet a deadline. It hit number one on
triple j's Roots Unearthed charts. Sydney launch is March 27 2010 @ Raval. If
