DAMIEN LEITH
How
did you get your start in the music industry?
I started
chasing after the music industry when I was sixteen. I played in tonnes of bands,
made heaps of demos, and even scored a semi-deal in New York when I was early
twenty. Unfortunately that didn't work out and it wasn't until I was thirty that
I got my break on Oz Idol.
Best part of the job?
I
get to do something that I love and feel passionate about.
Worst
part of the job?
It's 24-7 for a stress head like me!
Any
interesting experiences you can share?
I once did a singer-songwriter
night about ten years ago in a bar in Dublin called Molloys. On that same night,
Damien Rice played. There were only 50 people in the room and he was chatting
about an album he was working on called 'O'. Within six months, he was world famous.
Favourite
CD of all time and why?
'Grace' by Jeff Buckley. No matter
how many times I've listened to that album, I'm still blown away by how amazing
it is. The songs, the voice - incredible.
Tell us about
the best live show that you ever saw?
Believe it or not,
it was Lionel Ritchie. Took my parents as a present and I was well impressed and
was dancing on the ceiling!
Favourite bars/clubs/pubs to
hang out in?
So many great bars, the Different Drummer
in Glebe has great cocktails. And the North Bondi RSL is always a good night with
a great view.
Take us through a typical "day in the
life of Damien Leith".
Well, everyday is different.
But of late, on the promo trail of the new album, it looks a bit like this. Wake
up at 6am by two little munchkins, my 2 & 4 year old boys, have breakfast
together, take our dog Billy for a walk, get everyone ready for the day. Kids
for pre-school, etc. Check schedules for the day, phone interviews for radio and
press. Pack bags for promo work in Perth then onto Melbourne!
What
advice would you give to someone looking at getting involved in the music industry?
It's
consistent hard work and commitment that keeps things moving. It's a very difficult
industry and takes thick skin at times to survive. It's really important to be
open minded about things, but at the same time, to have clear goals that you want
to achieve. The more certain you are, the more confidence people have in your
abilities.
Any news or final comments?
My
new album 'Remember June' is out in stores. It's entirely original and my greatest
work to date. Hope you like.
