DECLARATION
ON THE RIGHTS OF
INDIGENOUS PEOPLES
Michel Streich
Celebrating
Australia's endorsement of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
Published in association with Amnesty International
On
13 September 2007, after 22 years of negotiation and deliberation, the General
Assembly of the United Nations adopted the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous
Peoples with an overwhelming majority of votes. Only four countries voted against
it: the USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. Some two years later, the Rudd
Government overturned this decision, and so in 2009, this landmark Declaration
has finally been endorsed by the Australian Government. Michel Streich's beautiful
and emotive illustrated book, Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples,
celebrates this acknowledgement.
The first ever illustrated
book of the Declaration, Michel Streich's evocative artwork brings child-like
innocence and a moving, original interpretation to the issue of indigenous rights.
Published in association with Amnesty International, the Declaration on the Rights
of Indigenous Peoples is a powerful response to one of the most significant developments
in indigenous rights, and in recent Australian history.
