How did you get your start in the music industry?
It all started in my bedroom, throwing together beats on old equipment.
An experiment in sonic fascination, I guess. 10 years later (a very
slow, consistent and financially nefarious ride), it's grown to something
that sorta, kinda, more or less pays the bills. I've made my own way
with the support of a great number of others with their hearts invested
in a side of music culture that was never about the money.
Best part of the job?
Helping to create/explore spaces where others can find some type of
unity and celebration. Exposure to the craft and inspiration of others.
Stories. Dancing.
Worst part of the job?
Being frequently ripped-off by the spiritually bankrupt; that and
the cliquiness and exclusivity that seems to accompany this culture.
Any interesting experiences you can share?
Oh, so many. Driving four hours to play at an underground party to
a dance floor of one stoned hippie. Rocking up on tour to a venue
in Blacktown with several others to find no PA, sound-tech, advertising
or DJ equipment supplied! Playing to sell-out crowds at the Metro
with Lamb. Crazy fan mail from strange groupies telling you about
their pets.
Favourite CD of all time and why?
Stevie Wonder - 'Songs in the Key of Life'. The stunning template
for so much electronic soul. Moving, profound, celebratory, deep,
sexy.
Tell us about the best live show that you ever saw?
Funnily enough, I'd have to say Bob Geldof at the Seymour Centre a
few years ago - and I don't even like his music! Proof that the integrity
and sincerity of an individual can make for a profoundly moving and
life-changing experience. Hopeful, engaging, direct and rich with
soul.
Favourite bars/clubs/pubs to hang out in?
In Sydney - Frigid at Petersham RSL on Sunday nights for dope down-beat
electronica. The Loft on Sunday nights for Freeform, Kuleto's on King
Street for a lazy cheap cocktail, The Basement - usually to see mates
play live. And when I'm there, VMF Club in Berlin - sublime and progressive.
What advice would you give to someone looking at getting involved
in the music industry?
Integrity and honesty are your biggest assets in the long run. This
and a sense of humour! If you have love and commitment to shaping
this community, you're immediately well-qualified! Practice your skill,
don't locate yourself at the centre of the universe, learn to multitask,
respect all those others who make your life possible (eg, the service
workers and unseen folks) and enjoy the ride as it unfolds in its
own inevitably crazy way. Take each day as it comes and let that be
enough.
