DIZZ1
How did you get your
start in the music industry?
Been playin drums since age 8 and was asked
to play in the year 12 band when I was in year 7. Got my first DJ gig in Mr Goodbar
back when I had just turned 18. Basically I asked the DJ if I could have a play
and he told me to bring my records the next week!
Best part of the
job?
I'm doing what I love!
Worst part of the job?
My
liver hurts!
Any interesting experiences you can share?
Just
got back from the Redbull Music Academy in Barcelona. I was chosen out of 2300
applicants to represent Australia. They set up a studio facility in a different
country each year and invite a bunch of influential people from past and present
to come talk about their experiences in the music/entertainment biz. Then after
dinner, we all go upstairs to the studios and jam/write tunes, whatever we please.
Then after all that, they set up gigs for each participant around town! It was
without a doubt the best musical experience of my life!
Favourite CD
of all time and why?
RUN DMC - Raising Hell. Was the first hip-hop tape
I owned! To this day everytime I hear it it's like Im 8 again!
Tell
us about the best live show that you ever saw?
Probably Roni Size and
Reprazent! (it was like the bloody space ship had landed). We supported them and
it got me so hyped to play electronic sampled drums live! That drummer (actually
the whole crew) was amazing!
Favourite bars/clubs/pubs to hang out in?
The Phoenix when there's a void night on (Hi-Jack sound system), Hermanns (wicked
sound system and cheap drinks), Croft Institute and Laundry in Melbourne
What
advice would you give to someone looking at getting involved in the
music
industry?
Like anything, it's going to take time, dedication and hard
work to get good at it - as long as you are having fun, go for it! Also remember
to enjoy the ride cause "making it" is an illusion...
Take
us through a typical "day in the life of Dizz1".
Wake up at
11ish, switch on the computer and have a listen to last night's work while I eat
breakfast,
work on it some more till I get hungry! Eat. Work some more till I get hungry!
Eat. Crack open some gin and soda (here's where the real inspiration comes in).
Keep writing til 5 or 6am. Crawl into bed as my girlfriend gets up! Sleeeeeeep!
Nah, I also teach Ableton Live music production at DJ warehouse in Leichhardt
and do gigs all over the place too.
Any news or final comments?
I'm working on an album with Om'Mas Keith from Sa-Ra Creative Partners (my beats
and his raps). Also a live project with Steve Spacek, Mark Pritchard and Josh
Wermut (me on drums) and I'm also part of a hip hop circus called Tom Tom with
Ben Walsh (The bird), Tom Thum (beatboxer) me on beats and scratches and four
amazing acrobats and we are off for a world tour early next year finishing on
Broadway 42nd St for a month season in May/June!
