3 MOBILE BROADBAND REVIEWWith an increasing number of people wanting access to the internet while on-the-go, service providers have responded by recently unleashing their wireless mobile broadband services. 3 has just launched its new Internet Key E180 Modem to complement its extensive range of mobile broadband solutions. At the size of just a thumb drive, the obvious benefits of the key over some of the fixed broadband options are quite visible from the get-go. For a start, there are no cables needed for it to function. Just plug the key into one of your USB ports and you're ready to rock n' roll. The other major benefit is the fact that no landline is needed for it to operate. That's right - no more phone line rental costs if you don't particularly need your landline. You simply plug the key into your computer or laptop ('plug and play' for both Windows and Mac operating systems) and you're hooked up to the world-wide-web no matter where you are. The key itself also has a rotatable connector that can be turned 270 degrees allowing you to optimise your reception. While mobile broadband offers a number of advantages, there are also some disadvantages to consider before taking the plunge. While 3's Internet Key E180 is 7.2 enabled supporting typical download speeds of 600kbps to 3Mbps and uplink speeds at up to 1Mbps in 3's Broadband Zones, speeds can vary dramatically depending on your location. As a general indicator, if your 3 mobile phone reception in your area is of reasonable quality, then 3's Mobile Broadband reception should follow suit. Congestion on the network during peak times is another potential major problem. When we tested the unit out, speeds were perfectly fine on some days but then there were the days where they were slower than dial-up speeds! Despite the fluctuation in speeds, 3's Mobile Broadband offers a fantastic solution to those that need to access the web while on-the-go. Just check the coverage in your local area before committing to a deal. The Internet Key E180 is available for purchase at 3 Stores, 3 Dealers and www.three.com.au. The Internet Key E180 comes with a two year warranty and is $199 outright or $10 per month on either the $15 / 1GB plan or $29 / 3GB plan over 24 months and $5 per month on the $29 / 2GB, $39 / 6GB and $49 / 7GB plans over 24 months.
