Pa Rum Pa Pum Pum I have to admit, I love Christmas. I am a big ol' Christmas buff! The Christmas CDs, the gift giving, the tree - I have the Christmas vibe. Although I have to admit that as each year passes and as I am getting older, I am finding it harder and harder to keep the Christmas spirit alive in myself and even more so in my friends around me. In one quick swift, Christmas is over for another year and I have reached another anti-climactic moment that is happening more frequently than I would like. Deadlines need to be reached more so than usual, work is constantly busy and stressful, the hours have tripled and I soon find myself forgetting about the spirit of Christmas. Instead, I am trying to think of what I need to do this week and when I can slot it into my schedule. There are the cards to write and send off, then the presents to organise and the money to save. Not to mention the social activities! Every weekend is booked and I don't have an ounce of free time left. Of course I have planned my annual Christmas Eve drinks/bbq at my house when I don't actually have time to plan anything. Where has the idealistic version of Christmas gone? You know in the Coke ads how everyone is really merry? Apart from the whole snowing thing, that's how I see Christmas. We all talk about Christmas being the 'silly season' but when do we have the time to be silly? Browsing through a Christmas brochure this week got me wondering just how I can save my dwindling Christmas spirit while remaining stress free and organised. And I think I have the answer for all of us struggling Christmas-ites out there with my top 15 tips for the season: 1. Vodka 2. Dragging friends and heading off to the Carols in the Domain. With vodka. 3. Once again dragging friends out to drive through the neighbourhood to browse the lights on all the houses. Possibly without vodka this time. 4. Have photo taken with Santa. Hey, it might be a little weird, but drag a friend along to that as well. 5. Wish a passer-by on the street a Merry Christmas. 6. Smile at the person standing at the traffic lights. 7. Grab some fake mistletoe and have a pash. 8. Eat a hell of a lot of food and not feel guilty about it. 9. Belt out some Christmas carols. 10. Buy a Christmas tree. 11. Buy loads of Christmas decorations and put them all around the house. 12. Wear a Santa hat. 13. Hand out Candy Canes to workmates. 14. Hang a Christmas stocking. 15. Be positive. In all seriousness, what will always give me the spirit of Christmas is family. Whether that is your immediate family, your best friends, your partner or your dog, Christmas time is meant to be shared with the people you love. So go on! Invite everyone you know over to your house, chuck a few sausages on the barbie - stuff getting stressed about cooking a five course meal. Give some gifts to the people you love and have fun! So for now I am feeling like my Christmas spirit has returned in full force - watch out world! As the man himself says, 'Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.' Peace, love, and goodwill to one another. Matt Young Have any comments about this article? Have your say by emailing letters@sydneyunleashed.com
