How
did you get your start in the music industry?
Someone
called me from Australia and asked me if I fancied going on tour with Icehouse.
Best
part of the job?
Travel, nice hotels, camaraderie, playing
stuff you love.
Worst part of the job?
Not
working, which is actually an awful lot more of the time than you might imagine.
Any
interesting experiences you can share?
So many in fact,
that I've written a book and do a stand-up show! Impossible to pick a random one
without any context, I can't think where to start. I was once wheel chaired off
a flight from Japan with Jimmy Page though.
Favourite album
of all time and why?
Probably 'Quadrophenia', it's just
a masterpiece on so many levels. I discovered it at 14 and it described a mythical
adolescence which I liked to pretend was like mine.
Tell
us about the best live show that you ever saw?
Pink Floyd
performing 'The Wall' at Earl's Court in 1980. I was only 18 and remember thinking,
'I hope this isn't the best thing I'm ever going to see', but alas it turns out
it was.
Take us through a typical "day in the life of Guy Pratt"
At
the moment it involves getting up at some ungodly hour having not slept because
I'm so worried about not waking up at some ungodly hour, then getting on a plane
to somewhere in Latin America and playing brilliant complicated instrumental music
with Dominic Miller and some other jaw-droppingly brilliant musicians.
What
advice would you give to someone looking at getting involved in the music industry?
I
don't think I can. The music industry that I was in doesn't really exist anymore.
If I was 18 today I certainly wouldn't be looking to getting into it. I just don't
think it's where it's at for hip kids these days. Go comedy!
Any news
or final comments?
I cannot begin to tell you how tired I am. I'm looking
forward to coming back to Australia with a load of fresh and funny stories about
this tour though.
