How
did you get your start in the music industry?
I put some
songs on Youtube that went viral. It was always private lounge room jams before
that! Never considered a music career.
Best part of the
job?
Being able to do what you love and meeting interesting
people.
Worst part of the job?
I
only recently learned how to drive. So before that, having to carry around my
gear on public transport was a bit of nightmare!
Any interesting
experiences you can share?
A guy approached me when I was
busking a while back and asked me to play at a private party at a city bar. He
seemed pretty harmless so I stupidly gave him my phone number so he could contact
me with details about the gig. Anyway, he started calling me randomly very early
in the morning with ideas of Gaelic cover songs he wanted me to learn, with a
Gaelic tutor he'd arranged for me, of course. Not that he was even Irish. Anyway,
it was all quite weird so needless to say I passed on the gig, which I later discovered
was actually never happening anyway!
Favourite album of
all time and why?
Any Beatles album or 'Blue' by Joni Mitchell.
That album has helped me through a lot.
Tell us about the
best live show that you ever saw?
I saw Paul McCartney
live at the Kings Dock in Liverpool a few years ago. The crowd must have been
50,000 strong and we were right up the front. You could tell he was so happy to
be playing in his hometown, he was just adorable. He and his band were absolutely
amazing!
Favourite bars/clubs/pubs to hang out in?
In
Sydney, you can't go past the Opera Bar on a balmy summer evening. And I really
love the Old Fitzroy in Kings Cross/Woolloomoolloo. It's a bit out of the way
but has such character. I do miss the London pubs though. I lived over there for
a couple of years and miss those lovely old pubs covered in flower pots, where
you can sit drinking chocolate ale all afternoon and play board games. Two of
my faves are the Jolly Gardener in Putney and The Churchill Arms in Notting Hill.
What
advice would you give to someone looking at getting involved in the music industry?
Get
actively involved in the local music scene. Invest in yourself as an artist and
work hard on your live skills. Everything else comes after.
Any
news or final comments?
My debut EP launch is at The Basement
(29 Reiby Place, Circular Quay) on Wednesday 26th May. I'm co-headling with TonkSGreen
who are amazing! It should be a great night so if you're free, it would be so
great if you could come along!
