Jess McAvoy
DOB:
11/01/1980
How did you get your start in the music industry?
I embarked on a mission to get famous - more specifically, to meet
Madonna, when I was 16. I started playing my original compositions
in pubs in Perth and moved slowly towards touring and eventually moving
to Melbourne. I started up my record company Henduwin Music when I
released my first EP in 1999.
Best part of the job?
The best part of my job is being able to follow my music throughout
the world. I have traveled all over Australia and recently to LA and
New York. Being able to show my creativity all over the world is a
true blessing.
Worst part of the job?
Being poor.
Any interesting experiences you can share?
Dropping the radio mic pack into the toilet bowl minutes before being
filmed performing for channel 9's 'Postcards' in 1999
Favourite CD of all time and why?
There are a few but Portishead's 'Dummy' is up there as is Radiohead's
'The Bends'. Mainly because they remind me of the time when I first
started performing seriously.
Tell us about the best live show that you ever saw?
Alanis Morissette at the Entertainment Centre in Perth. It was my
first ever live gig that I ever went to and probably the last time
that I didn't spend the whole gig picking it apart. The magic of that
show disappeared shortly after when I saw an ABC special where she
played the same show TO THE LETTER at a different place. Rage Against
the Machine at my first ever Big Day Out was incredible.
Favourite bars/clubs/pubs to hang out in?
The Empress Hotel - North Fitzroy, Melbourne. Where everybody knows
my name.
What advice would you give to someone looking at getting involved
in the
music industry?
Have a great product that you believe in. Work hard. Network, and
be kind to EVERYONE YOU MEET. You never know how they can help you
in the future.
Take us through a typical "day in the life of Jess McAvoy".
Well, lately its heaps of rehearsing, planning and stressing about
the new record. I work full time as a delivery driver so with Christmas
coming up, there is no real routine. Can't wait to head into the studio
and focus on one thing at a time.
Any news or final comments?
I'll be playing in Sydney on December 7 at the Vanguard with Carla
Werner. December 12 I head into the studio to record an album with
Marty Brown (Clare Bowditch's Producer).
