Kiyomi Vella Interview

Kiyomi Vella Interview

After appearing as a finalist in The Voice 2013, Kiyomi Vella is about to launch her new single ‘Alien’ at The Roxbury (24 May) and Brass Monkey (25 May) in Sydney. We chat to Kiyomi Vella ahead of the release.

How did you get your start in the music industry?

I’ve been singing with my sister at home my whole life, in the living room having lots of fun on our karaoke machine. In Year 7, some people had heard that I could sing and suggested that I perform at a school concert at e 2013. Had an amazing time with Joel (Madden) and the rest of the team. Learned so much and now I’m releasing new music and going on an East Coast Aussie Tour.

Best part of what you do? the end of the year. So I did it, it was incredibly scary, but I fell in love with singing from there. I started performing everywhere, writing my own music and took the next jump and went onto The Voic

I think the best part about being a performer is that I get to be creative in so many ways! I can write about whatever comes to my head, use my crazy ideas in my music, lyrics, music videos, photos, on stage and make any song my own.

And the worst part?

I like my relaxing time, watching movies and being in bed all day. That doesn’t happen very often when it’s crazy busy and there’s lots of things to organise, but it’s all a part of the fun!

Any interesting experiences you can share?

Once when I was about to perform for a party, I accidentally got locked in the bathroom 10 minutes before I was supposed to be singing.  After 30 minutes of screw drivers fiddling with the door lock, I was free! Had a glass of water and sang my set. It was quite funny.

Favourite album of all time and why?

I love Fallout Boy – Folie A Deux. Lost count of how many times I’ve had that album on shuffle. It’s dynamic and has great lyrics and hooks.

Best live performance that you’ve ever seen?

Pink in concert. She is amazing in every way.

Favourite bars/clubs/pubs to hang out in?

Bridie O’Reilly’s on Chapel Street, Melbourne is a cool bar to hang out in. It has a bar, place to chat, and there’s a dance floor with a live band.

Take us through a typical day in the life of Kiyomi Vella.

Sometimes it’s a bunch of emails and calls, other days it’s being creative-writing music, making videos, thinking of ideas, and other days it’s jumping on and off planes singing around Australia!

What advice would you give to someone looking at getting involved in the music industry

Be persistent, don’t give up, be creative, be yourself and have fun!

Any news or final comments?

New Single ‘ALIEN’ will be out soon with music video and East Coast Tour with Ben Hazlewood and special guest Mali Koa. Starts 15th May 2014.
