How did you get your start in the music industry?
By having a go at all the aspects the scene I was so interested
in: Radio, Web, Record Stores, Street Press, Promoting, Record Labels, you name
it, tried it. It all lead back to the fact that I love DJing. I've been at it
since I was 14 - school mates and friends growing up know me for that - and I'm
dedicated to the art and culture of it all. My passion for music is so much that
I had to find a way to share the tunes I love with others - what better way to
do that than be a DJ!
Best part of the job?
The
travelling and lifestyle. I've always said one of the main goals to get out of
my life is to travel the world doing what I love doing. I am on that path right
now!
Worst part of the job?
The body
clock is everywhere, the ears take a beating, and no matter how much effort I
put into my sets, there will always be that one person who has to request something
moronic.
Any interesting experiences you can share?
Playing
the Space closing party this year was super special in itself, but a few things
happened in that set that made it one of my highlights of the Ibiza season this
past year. It was a terrible rainy weekend in Ibiza, the set was going off, midway
through the club has a power failure, everything turns off in the room for a few
seconds - made for all the more response from the crowd though! Then for the last
30 minutes, I decided to turn it out with a special dedication to MJ, it went
nuts. I put a lot of creativity into that mimimix and it got a HUGE response from
the crowd. Killing it at Space Closing = special memory!
Favourite
CD of all time and why?
Too damn hard a question! Apart
from the overdone obvious big ones from MJ, Prince or Stevie, I'm going to have
to go with my favourite artist who I can listen to anytime, anywhere - and that
someone is D'ANGELO! Both his albums are perfect but I'm going to have to go with
'Brown Sugar', his debut album. The Neo-Soul mastermind could do no wrong on this
album, the smoothest sexiest vocals with the most chilled laidback beats make
this album a perfect companion for being with your special someone or even smoke
outs with the crew!
Tell us about the best live show that
you ever saw?
Prince at the O2 in London 2007. Spent a
lot of money on a front row ticket, but had to do it. Prince is my idol, went
all out, was standing inside the Prince symbol stage and my mouth was on the ground
for the entire show. Being metres away from Prince absolutely killing it with
his band was sheer audible chocolate from the get go!
Take
us through a typical Ibizan "day in the life of Mo'Funk".
Wake
up around midday, have a quick cereal hit. Walk down from the villa to Café
mambo for the early set from 1-6pm - perfect blue skies and crystal clear ocean
as my audience, hundreds of walkers by on the promenade that connects Café
DelMar to Café Mambo - super chilled vibes being played and nothing but
hot bodies and a relaxed atmosphere. Come 6pm, time to head home to chill by the
pool for a few hours before heading out to a dinner with newly arrived friends
to the island. Then onto Pacha come midnight for a set on the terrace till 6 in
the morning, friends in hand and everyone is having the time of their lives. Come
closing time, it's time for a villa after party then depends. Get home by 9-10am,
sleep for a few hours before getting up at midday to do it all over again!
What
advice would you give to someone looking at getting involved in the music industry?
Don't
do it unless your 100% committed to making it. If you're in it just because it
sounds cool, you will not last. Real passionate artists will always succeed. If
you think you can be a pop star, then jump over the Australian idol because we
don't want you messing up the dreams of the real stars! With DJs, same goes. If
you're in it to be cool, we know it instantly, and DJs like myself will come up
there after you finish your set and show you how REAL DJs DO IT!
Any
news or final comments?
Support the club scene guys! We
are letting these cheese heads take over what was once a truly credible and expanding
scene. Don't let scenesters take over what is ours. Real music and DJs will LIVE
ON!
