RAEKWON
(FROM THE WU-TANG CLAN)
ON HIS FIRST SOLO AUSTRALIAN TOUR
Off
the back of the new Raekwon album - 'Built For Cuban Linx 2', Wu-Tang Clan's hottest
MC hits Australia for the first time, solo and ready to deliver all his Wu-Tang
classics!
The Wu-Tang Clan, arguably the most creative and commercially
viable rap ensemble ever, turned the game upside down nearly two decades ago with
"Enter The Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers", a mix of street anthems, samples and
deep soul cuts. While each of the nine founders approached with a unique style,
it was Raekwon who established himself as the brooding member of the darker side
of the Clan. In 1995, he dropped the undisputed solo classic "Only Built
4 Cuban Linx", which received unanimous critical praise for its evocative,
image-rich storytelling and cinematic Mafia obsession (on some tracks, he adopted
the guise of gangster Lex Diamonds). Also notable was Raekwon's chemistry with
heavily featured collaborator Ghostface Killah.
Raekwon returned to the
Clan for the group's 1997 sophomore effort, Wu-Tang Forever, and appeared on a
track by R&B group Allure, and a track with Fat Joe, alongside Nas, Jadakiss
and Big pun. He followed this up with his next album "Immobiliarity in 1999,
and recorded with Wu for their subsequent albums "The W", and "Iron
Flag", and then released another solo album "The Lex Diamond Story"
in 2003.
Fourteen years in the making, not even Raekwon himself could have
anticipated the excitement and hype of the release of his album "Only Built
4 Cuban Linx Part II". Released in September 2009, the album features many
Wu-Tang members and affiliates, as well as Slick Rick, Jadakiss, Busta Ryhmes,
Beanie Sigel and more. The album stood up to its hype with HipHopDX saying "'Raekwon
brought it back to lyrical, dope rap. He released an album that spoke to teens,
twenty-somethings, thirty-somethings, and beyond. Without compromising, the Chef
made an edgy Hip Hop record that refused to bastardize the catalog he laid down
15 years ago."
2009 also saw Raekwon named the #10 hottest MC in the
game by MTV, and major hip hop site HipHopDX released their awards and named "Only
Built 4 Cuban Linx Part II" the album of the year and described it as "The
Hip Hop equivalent to The Godfather 2, with Rae as revitalized as Marlon was".
He also picked up Best Emcee of 2009.
