ROCK N ROLLA: REVIEWLondon's unflattering underbelly is in the spotlight for director Guy Richie's comeback film 'Rock N Rolla'.It's sexy, loose, smart, fast and extremely funny. It's crammed full of colourful criminals. There are set ups, break ups and some serious twisted schemes. The premise begins with a cool crim called Archie sprouting life's anecdotes while lowering a wheelchair bound thief into a well. Archie happens to work for an even more dastardly fellow, the notorious Lenny Cole. A London kingpin who beyond his dirty deeds also doesn't like Russians. This is unfortunate however as after he conducts a routine double-cross of two charming thugs named One Two and Mumbles, the Russian intolerant Lenny is swept up into the presence of a Cossack real estate mogul. These incidences are only the tip of a filthy iceberg in a plot that also includes an elusive junkie rock star and a crooked accountant for the Russians sleeping with the enemy. The latter is portrayed by a resistant actress in Thandie Newton, much more than just eye candy, her rendezvous with One Two (Gerard Butler) are an exhilarating treat between the mayhem.Guy Richie hasn't reached these heights since his equally impressive films 'Snatch' and 'Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels' made their mark pre marriage to Madonna. His intentions are obviously to affect your senses so it's impossible to look away. He has written intelligent and lyrical dialogue, a type of tough guy poetry delivered by a polished hand picked cast. A foot race along train tracks between One Two and an injured Russian who just won't give up no matter how many times he's been hit over the head with an iron bar has to be seen to be believed. The offbeat sub plots are equally as intense with a drugged out rock star presumed dead, is actually very much alive who unexpectedly has a prized possession fall into his hands. The sought after object is a mysterious painting you never actually see properly, taken from the Russians, they want it back without remorse to anyone involved. The humour is as black as the ace of spades, a driven criminal caper with multiple memorable moments. Emmy Award winner of television's 'Entourage', Jeremy Piven, is underused as nervous record producer Mickey, while soon to be seen in the new James Bond film as Bond girl 'Strawberry Fields', Gemma Arterton is impressive in a small role amongst the male dominated cast. 'Rock N Rolla' is rounded out with a super soundtrack full off catchy upbeat songs to match the action.Shane A. Bassett
