In
2007, three lads named Dylan, Joel and Matt were drinking beers in a Sydney pub
that they'd all spent a lot of time in. Between drinks, jukebox programming and
cigarette smoking, they finally discussed something that was always in the back
of their minds - forming a melodic, indie pop band together. Welcome Sailmaker.
After
numerous comings and goings of bass players and potential guitarists, they settled
down with producer and engineer Lachlan Mitchell in June 2008 to record their
first EP 'Build a Fire'. Released in August, they toured nationally shortly after
and eventually found a permanent bassist in Hesh. The EP was received by the press
with warm, sometimes hyperbolically gushing reviews (could they be the first band
to be compared to 'a warm mug of cocoa'?!). Through radio play nationally via
Triple J, FBi in Sydney and local radio stations around the country, Sailmaker
has built an appreciative following of fans who inadvertently find themselves
singing 'hey-oh hey-oh' in their head whilst washing the dishes and gazing out
the window.
A single genre may not quite encapsulate the sound of Sailmaker.
At times they sound almost quaint and innocent, and at others they create something
much more sarcastic and complex. The band makes music which forces people to bop
their heads and tap their feet. They've toured and played with the likes of Epicure,
Horsell Common, Grand Fatal, Cloud Control, Melanie Horsnell, Down Hills Home.
Like
Alaska, and a slot at Peats Ridge festival over New Years in 2008.
With
tour dates now confirmed, the lads from Sailmaker are already warming up Australian
Alternative Radio with their first single 'Branches', off their forth-coming EP,
'Beg'.
Through Sailmaker's passionate process of self-recording and self-producing,
The 'Beg' EP is one of three that have been born out of the bands' own studio
in the heart of the Sydney suburb, Annandale. The concept of 'Beg', 'Borrow' and
'Steal' strongly reflects the motions the band have gone through to accomplish
this exciting project which will be a staggered release over the next six months.
The first release, 'Beg' is released September 25th, with 'Borrow' and
'Steal' to follow. 'Steal' will be a true treat for fans, as this will be a free
EP available only by download to those who register at www.begborrowandsteal.com.au
