Steve Balderson
Writer/Director of 'Pep Squad', 'Firecracker', and 'Phone Sex'
How did you get your start in the film industry?
I wasn't very good at doing anything else.
Best part of the job?
Getting the images out of my brain.
Worst part of the job?
The cruel, jealous people who want to hurt you.
Any interesting experiences you can share?
When we did the explosion scene in Pep Squad, we had to use condoms
to fill the propane because the grocery store was out of balloons.
Favourite CD of all time and why?
The Fountainhead with Gary Cooper. It's the story of my life.
Tell us about the best live show that you ever saw?
The best live show I ever saw was the Jackson Victory Tour. It was
also my first live show. I was, like, nine years old.
Favourite bars/clubs/pubs to hang out in?
My favourite pub in London is on the Jack the Ripper trail; favourite
in Paris is near the Louvre, and favourite locally, oh, wait... Wamego
doesn't have anything good to hang out in.
Take us through a typical "day in the life of Steve Balderson".
Wake at 7am, have hot tea with no caffeine, yoga, morning cigarette,
shower, get dressed, eat whole wheat cereal with no sodium, go to
work, answer calls, answer emails, check in at myspace to see emails
there, close the internet, work on latest project, go to lunch with
family, return from lunch, send more emails, drink water, have mid-day
cigarette, continue working, do a bit of public relations and faxing
media, work on next project, quit no matter what I'm doing at 5:30pm,
leave office, go home to share time with my partner, make dinner,
have wine or champagne, evening cigarettes, eat, watch the CBS evening
news with Katie Couric, then maybe read or watch educational programming
on Tivo, get sleepy, go to sleep. Repeat.
Tell us a bit about your new film, 'Phone Sex'.
I invited everyone to call me up and answer the question: "What
is sexy?" It's a bit pop art mixed with NPR and a dash of naughtiness.
Part installation, part documentary. Perfect for playing on the TV
in the background (like one would a record) during a cocktail party,
or fall housecleaning. Or simply to find out what everyone thinks
is the answer to that question!
