Ted 2: Review

Ted 2: Review

Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Seth MacFarlane, Jessica Barth, Amanda Seyfried, Morgan Freeman, Liam Neeson, Sam J. Jones, Tara Strong (Rated MA – 115 min).

When the original Ted was unleashed in 2012, few thought a foul-mouthed, oversexed teddy bear with a big heart running around with his best friend from childhood John, would make much of an impact at the box office. However early on, controversy was assured, especially as very little marketing shocked parents taking in toddlers unaware this talking plush toy movie was no Care Bears adventure.

Ted turned into a money-spinning critical hit which meant there was always going to be a sequel from outspoken creator, former Academy Award host singer, actor and animator Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy).

For everyone concerned, Ted and his one true love Tami-Lynn (Jessica Barth) were officially married by Flash Gordon (Sam J. Jones) at the end of the original and now their continuing story looks at the unlikely experience of childbirth. A donor is needed, John is Ted’s second true love and a human so get ready for bumbling sexual innuendo that lets rip early on and rarely lets up.

Some slightly serious tones are attempted including rights of equality and the true meaning of family issues explored, however it seems the objective of this outrageous comedy is to offend. This is fine if aspects remain funny but this sequel is more hit or miss continuously trying hard to exasperate the audience with vulgarity. Also, there are only so many drug-induced mishaps you can watch without wincing. Cheech and Chong did it better.

Stunt casting of Hollywood royalty such as Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman is smart. Sam J. Jones reprising his 1980 Flash Gordon persona who made a colossal cameo in Ted is welcomed. The girl with saucer eyes Amanda Seyfried (Mean Girls) holds sharp comic timing as the lawyer to these two misfits.
