Leading
choreographer returns for final instalment of 'Tenebrae' -
the breathtaking
trilogy of music and movement
When The Song Company
take to the stage this Easter for the much-anticipated conclusion of the 'Tenebrae'
trilogy, it will represent a homecoming of sorts for director Shaun Parker.
Parker
danced in the productions of 'Tenebrae I and II', which left an indelible impression
on audiences in 2005 and 2006. Now one of Australia's leading contemporary choreographers,
Parker is thrilled to be working with The Song Company again in this daring integration
of classical music and modern dance.
"In the 'Tenebrae' trilogy,
we see the old art forms of classical and vocal music collide with contemporary
dance and movement. The result is quite challenging and powerful," said Parker,
creator of the highly acclaimed 'Blue Love' and 'This Show Is About People'.
Based
on the haunting 'Responsories for Holy Week' by famed 17th century composer Carlo
Gesualdo, 'Tenebrae III' will be performed at CarriageWorks in Sydney from April
8th - 11th.
Three fearless dancers will join The Song Company's
six vocalists for the bold collaboration, blurring the boundaries between sight
and sound, lyrics and motion. Structured in the ancient ritual of Easter Holy
Week, 'Tenebrae III' is a fascinating experiment with the movement of the singing
body, and the universal themes of humanity, sacrifice and death.
Artistic
Director, Roland Peelman said the modern, industrial spaces of CarriageWorks provided
the perfect setting for the contemporary take on Gesualdo's composition.
"The
juxtaposition of classic and modern will make for a truly visceral experience
and demonstrate that Gesualdo's music has lost none of its power or relevance,"
said Peelman. "It's important that these great works of art don't just end
up as museum pieces."
