Paddington has a new hidden gem and it’s called The Stables. Tucked away in a quiet, mostly residential street, The Stables Restaurant and Bar brings a touch of luxury to the everyday with innovative modern Australian cuisine, premium specialty cocktails and a beautifully executed wine list.
On our recent visit to Paddington’s newest neighbourhood haunt, one of the first things that stood out was its incredible exterior. Housed in a sandstone building that has played a vibrant role in Paddington’s history since the 1800s, it has maintained much of its original charm complete with wrought iron window bars and lofty ceilings. Featuring a muted palette of polished concrete, marble and touches of brass and leather, The Stables Restaurant and Bar is a warm yet sophisticated setting for enjoying a drink and share plate with friends, family, or business clients.
The food offering takes diners on a journey that explores a wide range of free-range meat, specialty seafood, and delicious sides. Infused with the slightest hint of Asian inspired flavours, this is contemporary dining with a wholesome, hearty edge that is bound to have you coming back time and time again. The menu consists of everything from Butter Poached Lobster and Slow Cooked Pork Jowl to Braised Lamb Belly.
One of our recommended share plates would have to be the Black Angus Tataki. With black vinegar, soy, and shallots, it is beautifully presented, tasty, and very generously sized. Another favourite is the Confit Octopus with charred corn puree, dukkha, almond paste, zucchini, and confit kipflers. The addition of the dukkha gives it that extra bit of oomph, and a delectable crunch, making for a succulent refreshing appetizer.
For the main, you can’t go wrong with the John Dory fillet. The smoked eel and carrot broth, choko, artichoke purée, and artichoke chips really complement the fish. Delicious, fresh, and full of zest. For a vegetarian option, the Miso Braised Eggplant fits the bill perfectly coming with parmesan, shallots, dill and aromatics. A great combination of flavours that tantalise the tastebuds.
The drinks list also doesn’t disappoint with a number of classic and in-house cocktails to enjoy, a wide selection of wine with a distinctly Australian focus, and a collection of some of the best of the current craft beer industry. With its fabulous food, wide variety of drinks, and incredible service, The Stables Restaurant and Bar is a great addition to Paddington’s fine dining scene.
