The highly anticipated novel from the critically acclaimed author
of Birth Deaths Marriages. In the tradition of The Slap and Indelible Ink, Too
Close to Home is a superb dramatic account of contemporary Australian life.
Freya
lives in the slowly gentrifying inner-city suburbs of Sydney with her partner
Matt and their daughter Ella. A successful playwright, Freya writes uncomfortable
domestic dramas. To her friends Freya and Matt are seemingly the perfect couple,
together for years, the picture of domestic bliss.
As the stultifying heat
of summer descends, Shane, an Aboriginal man, moves up the road. He not only brings
with him a different approach to life, he also has news of a boy who might be
Matt's son.
Set against the back-drop of one of the most interesting
events in recent Australian political history, the demise of the Rudd government
Too Close To Home explores the idea of family in the face of larger social change.
Seven years since her last adult novel, Georgia Blain returns with a stunning
portrayal of the Australian family told with tenderness and acumen. "Georgia
Blain has the gift of clarity: in how she sees, and how she writes. After reading
this perfectly crafted novel, I felt I was seeing a familiar world with a new
set of eyes."
