The wait is over - triple j's Hottest 100 Vol. 15 has finally hit
the stores!
It was neck and neck until the final vote was counted. Only thirteen
votes separated UK rockers Muse's Knights of Cydonia (#1) and local
heroes Silverchair's Straight Lines (#2), making the 2007 Hottest
100 the closest contest in the history of the poll.
triple j music director Richard Kingsmill says: "Muse lead virtually
all the way, but even during the last weekend of voting, it was still
neck and neck between them and Silverchair. In the end, the whole
list of songs was a really great indication of how fantastic and diverse
the music scene was in 2007. Here is a cross section of some of the
best songs voted into the chart this year. I reckon we'll still be
enjoying these for years to come. Thanks again for making the Hottest
100 such a special event and for sharing our passion for good new
music."
The poll was also the largest in the Hottest 100's 19-year history,
with votes cracking the 700,000 mark for the first time. Kingsmill
says, "It's fantastic that we broke the record for the number
of votes this year. It shows how much passion and tradition is still
attached to our Hottest 100 after all these years."
It was another strong year for Australian music, the Aussies comprising
10 of the top 20 artists, and with 51 of the top 100 home-grown. Locals
Silverchair, John Butler Trio and Josh Pyke (along with internationals
Bloc Party and Kings of Leon) scored the most entries in the chart,
with three songs apiece, while Perth-born J Award winners The Panics
made their Hottest 100 debut with 'Don't Fight It', which landed at
#10. Sydney's Faker made the top 10 for the first time with 'This
Heart Attack'.
On the whole, there was an even spread across musical styles, and
generations. From Urthboy to Modest Mouse, M.I.A. to Operator Please,
triple j's commitment to diversity is reflected in our listeners'
choices. Kingsmill notes, "It's pleasing to see a good cross-section
of genres and a good representation of hip-hop, especially towards
the upper reaches of the chart. Entries from Midnight Juggernauts,
Digitalism, Cut Copy, Justice and Muscles are a sign that the new
era of dance music has really hit home with our listeners."
For the second year in a row, this year's Hottest 100 Vol. 15 will
be available as two incredible versions - a double disc containing
43 tracks, and a neat single disc version containing 20 tracks.
