Why on earth did we decide to cross the road on a cold miserable night in Pyrmont? To get to the chicken and cocktails on the other side of course! Lovers of fine poultry and liquor now have an establishment where they can indulge in both after the recent opening of Whirly Bird at 84 Union Street.

The sultry lit space has an heir of casual elegance, showcasing exposed timber frames, bespoke light fixtures, and trimmed with velvet and rustic chrome. The open-plan space is split into multiple areas including a dining room, unique bars, and lounge areas which are perfect for any intimate celebratory drinks, lunch or dinner.

From delectable bar snacks to larger plates, Whirly Bird encourages shared-style dining focusing on fine poultry including their finger-licking five piece Buttermilk Fried Chicken smothered in one of two sauces: chilli & honey caramel or house-made smoky BBQ. We chose to start off with this one on our recent visit and what a great choice it was. Boneless with a crisp crust and luscious interior, we couldn’t help but lick our fingers clean after devouring it.

The menu is heaven for chicken lovers with messy wings to pick from, options from the rotiserrie, and a couple of schnitzel choices. We opted for the Chicken Cotoletta – crumbed flattened chicken breast, roast peppers, tomatoes, capers, marjoram, and a wedge of lemon. Not only was it one of the biggest schnitzel’s we’ve seen in Sydney, it was also one of the tastiest. With its golden, crunchy exterior, it was hard to resist.

The chicken-goodness doesn’t end there. If you like your burgers, either the Dirty Burger or Clean Burger will give you your fix. We sampled the latter with its grilled chicken, pineapple, cucumber, peri peri mayo and side of chips. The natural sweetness of the pineapple really adds to the flavour and make it a definite crowd-pleaser. With the addition of chips, it’s ensured you won’t be leaving the place hungry.

The extensive menu even appeals to vegetarians and vegans with the inclusion of delicious Salt ‘N’ Pepper Silken Tofu and the Vegan Power Bowl while there are also lighter eating options for the health-conscious such as the Roast Chicken Salad and Spiced Roast Cauliflower.

For the drinkers, there’s a vast selection of quality beers, an extensive wine list, and a variety of spirits, liquors and classically inspired cocktails. The bar’s wall is decked out with classic vinyl records so it’s no surprise to see the cocktail list inspired by musical legends from The Beatles to David Bowie. Our favourite had to be the Elvis Costello-inspired “Blood & Chocolate” comprised of sultana rum, blood orange solerno, port & chocolate, and raw cacoa rim. Highly recommended!

Whirly Bird is a great new place for a casual feast or a bit of a tipple with friends. Open from Sunday to Wednesday (12pm-12am) and Thursday to Saturday (12pm-1am), we can only suggest you cross the road like we did and experience the other side for yourself.
