Announcing the Donlevy Fitzpatrick
Scholarship
The late Donleavy Fitzpatrick (1946-2008) was
a visionary in many regards, but his contribution to the Australian wine and food
industry is a legacy that many of us enjoy on an almost daily basis. He fought
long and hard to bring a casual, European-style approach to drinking and dining
in Melbourne via reform of the city's liquor licensing laws. Bolstered by these
reforms, Melbourne's easy enjoyment of food and wine has become one of the city's
defining and most treasured qualities.
Fitzpatrick combined
his interest in property development and an enriched lifestyle to realise various
projects: Donlevy's, The Vic Ave Café, the Dog's Bar and most famously
the George Hotel complex, incorporating the now-iconic Melbourne Wine Room.
On
publication of the 2011 Penguin Wine Guide, the inaugural Donleavy Fitzpatrick
Scholarship will be awarded to a talented member of the Australian hospitality
trade in honour of both their achievement and Donlevy Fitzpatrick's enduring legacy.
'The
Penguin Good Australian Wine Guide 2010' is available now (RRP $24.94).
