Sonoma & Young Henrys break bread this Father’s Day

Sonoma & Young Henrys break bread this Father’s Day

Inner-Sydney icons Sonoma and Young Henrys are joining forces this Father’s Day with a collaboration that celebrates craft at its best: slow fermented sourdough and a cult dark ale with serious swagger.

Motorcycle Oil Miche begins with Sonoma’s long fermented miche dough, known for its natural depth and earthy complexity. Into this, the bakery team folds Young Henrys’ Motorcycle Oil, a black hoppy porter that has become a favourite among drinkers who like their beers loud, dark and full of character.

Hitting with roasted malt, subtle chocolate and coffee notes, and a bold hop backbone that keeps things kicking. Inspired by garage rock and bike culture, it is complex yet surprisingly sessionable and proof that dark does not mean heavy.

That flavour profile translates seamlessly into Sonoma’s iconic slow-fermented sourdough. Rye berries are steamed in the ale before being folded through, absorbing the beer and adding a soft, chewy contrast. The finished product is deeply burnished with a semolina dusted crust, an open brown crumb and a pronounced malt aroma. The flavour lands rich and roasty, lifted by gentle hop bitterness and a subtle sweetness on the finish.

Sonoma Founder Andrew Connole says the collaboration is rooted in shared values: “Sourdough and beer come from the same philosophy. You start with simple ingredients, ferment them slowly, and let time build the flavour. Motorcycle Oil brings a dark, roasted complexity that sits beautifully inside our miche. It is a loaf made with love, time and care, perfect for Father’s Day.”

Young Henrys Co-Founder Oscar McMahon says the partnership reflects the brewery’s Newtown spirit: “Sonoma are neighbours in location and in attitude, independent, craft driven and committed to doing things properly. Motorcycle Oil’s bold, roasted backbone plays perfectly with their iconic miche. It feels like a celebration of the things Dads love: excellent beer and top notch bread enjoyed in great company.”

Sonoma’s culinary team recommends Eggs and Smoked Trout for a clean, savoury start that mirrors the loaf ’s darker notes, LP’s sausage with BBQ sauce for a hearty, flavour-forward plate that leans into the miche’s depth, and Montgomery cheddar with homemade pickles for a sharp, nutty contrast lifted by bright acidity.

Each option stacks up to the Motorcycle Miche’s malty profile and offers a simple, generous way to serve it your way on Father’s Day.

The Sonoma X Young Henrys Motorcycle Oil Miche (RRP: $14) will be available to purchase from Sonoma’s NSW and ACT stores and Sydney market stalls from Friday 4 September – Sunday 6 September 2026 (Father’s Day) and until sold out.
