Known for its lively, modern take on Japanese Izakaya dining, Miji Bar & Grill continues to capture the essence of a Japanese Izakaya, while making things their own with a contemporary twist.

Recently opened in North Sydney, the cosy restaurant specialises in grilled seafood and fine sake that will instantly transport you straight to the streets of Tokyo. It prides itself on providing a dining experience that captures the essence of Japan while making things their own, from the food on the table to the drinks at the bar.

Led by Executive Head Chef Jacob Lee, the menu reflects Jacob’s skills, learnt from his time at Michelin-starred A Voce Columbus in New York, as well as Korea’s renowned Mingles and Tartine Bakery, where he trained under acclaimed chef Chad Robertson. At Miji, Jacob brings his fine-dining background into a more casual, approachable setting – combining elevated technique with comforting, share-style food.

Miji Bar & Grill is welcoming the cooler months with two new seasonal offerings: a limited-edition Hotpot Set Menu ($75pp, available May–July 2025) and an updated lunch menu. The limited edition Hotpot Set Menu is perfect for sharing and features: Edamame topped with smoked salt; Steamed Abalone with awabi kimo sauce, kombu jelly & pickled radish (2 per set); Sukiyaki Beef Hot Pot – wagyu beef, wombok, mushroom, sukiyaki broth; and Dessert of your choice (Hojicha Choux or Mont Blanc).

Jacob Lee has also reimagined Miji’s lunch offering, now featuring a broader range of traditional and contemporary Japanese comfort dishes, alongside some of the venue’s crowd favourites including their signature Teriyaki Eggplant ($12.00) and Egg & Crab Custard ($9.00).

For those seeking a hearty winter lunch option, their Rice Menu showcases classic Donburi offerings including Sukiyaki ($22), Hambagu ($18) or Miso Cod ($22), whilst their freshly made Udon Menu offers comforting options such as Prawn Bisque ($29.80), Beef ($23.80) or Carbonara ($23.80).

For an additional $5, diners can also upgrade their Don or Udon to a Lunch Set Menu, which includes Miso Soup, Mini Wafu Salad, and a small plate of your choice, including Beef Tartare, Chicken Karaage, Potato Salad, Grilled Scallop, Edamame, Teriyaki Eggplant, Crudo, or Chawanmushi (Egg & Crab Custard).

If you’re visiting for dinner, you can immerse yourself in the vibrant energy of Japanese street-style dining, inspired by the lively food alleys of Shinjuku. The menu is crafted for sharing, combining bold flavours, fresh ingredients, and expertly grilled dishes that pair perfectly with a cold beer or a glass of sake.

The menu includes a selection of ridiclously delicious skewers such as Wagyu, Mentaiko Zucchini, Beef, Chicken Thigh, Baby Octopus and more, small plates (Karaage, Abalone, Grilled Scallop, Potato Salad) and rice and noodle highlights such as the Vegan Udon, Beef Udon, Wagyu Yaku Udon and the warming Prawn Bisque Udon (bisque, black tiger, shallot) – rich, creamy and so flavour-packed.

There’s also a grill & share menu featuring King Crab Leg, Grilled Mackerel and Seasonal Grilled Fish while the raw bar is not to be missed with Fresh Oysters, Beef Tartare, Seasonal Crudo and the amazing Kanimiso Okonomi. Mixing Alaskan king crab meat, Hokkaido scallop, salmon roe, raw eggyolk, crab innards paste and served with maze special mixed rice, it’s a seafood lovers dream. So delicious!
