Oasis Hottest 100

Oasis #1 on Hottest 100

In what has come as a surprise to many, Wonderwall by Oasis has taken out the #1 spot in the 20 Years of triple j’s Hottest 100 poll. The song, which also topped triple j’s Hottest 100 poll in 1996, was the one that sent Oasis’s career to stratospheric heights. Noel Gallagher’s worship of the Beatles is no secret – he lifted the song’s title from George Harrison’s 1968 LP Wonderwall Music. Later covered by everyone from Jay-Z to Ryan Adams (the latter being the only version which earned Noel’s approval), Wonderwall proved a massive worldwide hit. While Oasis took the top spot, several artists managed multiple entries in the poll including Daft Punk, Silverchair and The Killers with three songs each, followed by Beastie Boys, Gorillaz, Gotye, Jebediah, Jeff Buckley, MGMT, Powderfinger, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead with two songs each. 1997 stood out as the year with the most popular songs with 11 songs from the countdown released that year. There are 49 songs from the 1990s (1993 – 1999) and 51 songs from the 2000s (2000 – 2012). Just under a million votes were cast with the average voting age being 25 (perhaps an indication why several pioneering acts were overlooked). Did the voters get it right? Tell us what you think.
