Sarah Harris

Sarah Harris Q&A

Co-host of Studio 10.

How did you get your start in the industry?

I got my foot in the door by doing a week of work experience in a TV newsroom in Brisbane. I made coffee and sorted papers with gusto!  It paid off; I landed a weekend job recording the news, and worked my way up from there.

Best part of what you do?

Nothing beats the buzz of hosting a live TV show in front of a studio audience. It’s electric.

And the worst part?

Spending an hour in the make-up chair every morning!  I just can’t sit still…

Any interesting experiences you can share of your time on Studio 10 so far?

We’ve had some terrific guests so far: Germaine Greer, Meshel Laurie, Ray Martin, Katie Price, Cameron Daddo, Dawn Fraser, Dr Karl… the list goes on! Anything can happen on live TV – and with Ita Buttrose, Joe Hildebrand and Jessica Rowe on the panel – things often go way off script! We’re a really tight team, a little family, and it’s not unusual for us to collapse in giggles. Jono Coleman’s our warm-up bloke and he is absolutely hysterical.

Favourite album of all time and why?

Versus, Pearl Jam. Every track is a cracker. Eddie Vedder is a rock god.

Best live performance that you’ve ever seen?

Beyonce’s Mrs Carter Show. Wow! Girl can sing and dance. I want to be her when I grow up.

Favourite bars/clubs/pubs to hang out in?

I’m more of a beach girl – Freshwater and Balmoral are my favourites – but I’m a sucker for good pub grub.  The Sheaf (in Double Bay) makes an awesome beef burger and their thick-cut beer battered chips are so good they should be illegal. The Oaks (in Neutral Bay) does a mean steak.

Take us through a typical day in the life of Sarah Harris.

I’m up at 4.45am scrolling through the news websites, before our 6am production meeting where we work out what’s going into the show. Then it’s into hair and make-up. Mornings are insanely busy, so I have to multi-task; subbing scripts on my laptop while the girls make up me up. Before I know it, it’s show time! After the show, we mingle with our studio audience before racing to another story meeting. Usually I’m home mid-afternoon, where I try to squeeze in some exercise before making dinner. My evenings are spent on the laptop staying across news websites and checking the next day’s show while flipping through various TV news bulletins. Bed time’s 9.30pm. Then it’s rinse and repeat!

Any news or final comments?

If you live in Sydney – or even if you’re just visiting – you must come and be part of the Studio 10 audience! You’ll get to meet celebrities, see how a TV show works and score a whole heap of free stuff. Plus, there’s Ita. Who doesn’t love Ita?
