Sketch The Rhyme
A live art hip hop gameshow, Sketch The Rhyme pits teams of visual artists and free-styling rappers against each other in a fast-paced, MC-driven battle of wits, played out for a live audience with the accompaniment of a live band, and not-so-serious nods to famed drawing duels: Pictionary and the legendary Mr Squiggle.
Sketch The Rhyme has just announced that it will be commencing a regular bi monthly (that’s once every two months folks) night at iconic Sydney venue The Basement, with the first of the series taking place Thursday August 8th and will feature Guest MC’s Ozi Batla and Joe New as well as regular Sketch MCs Jeswon (Thundamentals), P.Smurf and Rapaport. Covering a range of visual disciplines from street art and graffiti, to comics, cartoons and painting, Sketch artists will be Claire Nakazawa, Sam Clouston, Mie Nakazawa, Edgar Bodley and Paul Gilsenan. More guests artists and supports yet to be confirmed.
Following on from shows earlier this year at The Famous Spiegeltent in Melbourne and a 13 night debut season at The Adelaide Fringe Festival (where they won a weekly Theatre award), The Basement series will provide an opportunity for the crew to take Sketch The Rhyme to a whole new level, with a swag of new games and guests joining the usual suspects and crack live band.
Conceived by Big Village Records MC and label manager Rapaport, Sketch The Rhyme was developed during the 2008 Underbelly Festival, through collaborations between esteemed visual artists, freestyle MCs and improvising musicians. Spurred on by the sheer fun and creativity of those initial brainstorming sessions Sketch The Rhyme has since gone onto to feature at Melbourne Fringe Festival [2009] , Woodford Folk Festival [2009 & 2010], Edinburgh Fringe Festival [2011] and The Sydney Comedy Festival Great Debate as well as the aforementioned Adelaide Fringe Festival [2013].
