Since opening its first property in 2011, Space Hotel has achieved enormous success winning Best Backpacker Accommodation at the RACV Victorian Tourism Awards (VTA) in 2013, 2014 and 2015, earning them a place in the VTA Hall of Fame. Named as one of the world’s top ‘Poshtels’ by Lonely Planet, Space Hotel hosts groups, families and single travellers with accommodation options ranging from luxury rooms with skyline views to dorm beds.
We recently took a trip down to Melbourne to experience the hotel and see what all the fuss was about. Check-in time was 2pm but to our surprise, our room was available upon arrival earlier in the day. This gave us an opportunity to go up and take a look around. There are a large number of room types at the hotel ranging from private and family rooms with private facilities to dormitory rooms with shared facilities.
We were put in the Executive Queen Room – a more discreet room with a private bathroom, flat-screen TV and iPod docking station. The room was spacious with views overlooking the CBD and tall skyscrapers of Melbourne. It’s clear that Space Hotel try to cater to all types ranging from backpackers seeking cheap shared accommodation right through to singles and families seeking budget boutique options right in the heart of the CBD.
The hotel has a contemporary look and feel with an emphasis on facilitating social experiences. While we thoroughly enjoyed our privacy, all guests have access to a range of shared spaces including an internet cafe, stainless steel commercial kitchen, gym, and laundromat. Other facilities include a free in-house cinema, a bar downstairs (Blue Moon Bar) and a rooftop that boasts impressive panoramic views of the city with sun lounges and a spa.
The hotel is located within a kilometre of most attractions around the CBD and is just down the road from busy Lygon Street. Its proximity to places of interest combined with the highly affordable pricing makes Space Hotel a very attractive option. When you’re next planning a trip to Melbourne, we’d highly recommend visiting.
