Sydney Brownlow winner, and all Sydney Grand Final?
Although the NRL is the Sydney sport, there is still plenty of interest in the AFL this season with both NSW based teams smashing the Victorian dominant competition.
Not only that, the top players in the AFL are both from the Sydney teams, with the shortest Brownlow Odds across all betting sites for Sydney player Isaac Heeney, and not far behind is Greater Western Sydney star Tom Green.
The last time a Sydney player won the Brownlow was Adam Goodes back in 2006, and the last time Sydney won the AFL Grand Final was in 2012. Since then, both Sydney and GWS have made it to the big dance a combined four times, but not been able to bring home the bacon. GWS have never had a player win the Grand Final.
There will be a preview for the potential first ever all Sydney Grand Final this weekend, with the NSW Derby taking place on Saturday 4th of May, 2024 at the SCG, between Sydney Swans and Greater Western Sydney.
The AFL has seen plenty of growth in Queensland in the past few years, helpfully attributed to the Brisbane Lions success of making the Grand Final last year, and the AFL haven’t been quiet about their plans to expand more into NSW and QLD. With Sydney and GWS being the clear AFL Premiership Favourites this year, it is likely Sydneysiders will show more interest in the sport this year.
