Hamsi Taverna recently opened its doors at Sydney Fish Market, bringing Mediterranean-inspired flavours to Sydney’s hungry diners.

Hamsi Street has now opened next door and offers a more casual, quick-serve alternative for those looking to enjoy its delicious food in a fast, takeaway format.

Launched by acclaimed chef Somer Sivrioğlu, the culinary talent behind Efendy Istanbul, Anason, and Maydanoz (Chef’s Hat), Hamsi Street brings Istanbul street food to Sydney – perfect for those on the go.

The menu draws on the freshest seasonal produce from the Sydney Fish Market, featuring standout dishes like the iconic Balik Ekmek (Fish Sandwich) and the scrumptious Taksim Sloppy Burger.

The takeaway also offers a curated selection of wines, beers and non-alcoholic options to complement your meal, including Somer’s own Yulli’s beer ‘Sommy’s Lager’, a rice lager that pairs perfectly with the Fish Sandwich.

While Hamsi Street is ideal for those looking for a quick bite, Hamsi Taverna next door focuses on relaxed, long lunch sessions and late-night dining – perfect for those seeking more of a sit-down experience.

Inspired by the Bosphorus fish restaurants and the beach clubs of the Aegean coast, Hamsi Taverna lives at the crossroads of sea breeze and city spirit. Overlooking the water with Anzac Bridge in the background, it’s the perfect spot to kick back with friends or family over a nice meal.

The menu is designed for sharing and is packed with some of the freshest seafood and tastiest Istanbul-inspired dishes. Starter highlights include Sydney Rock Oysters, Beluga Caviar and Scallop, Tuna & Kingfish Tartare while some of the more substantial offerings include Grilled Swordfish Steak, Charcoal Lobster, and the Baked Conchiglie Pasta with sweet spanner crab and bisque.

If you’re like us and struggle to choose from the menu, you can opt for one of their set menus. Our top pick is the $85 per person shared menu which features a great selection of the restaurant’s finest offerings. The experience kicks off with Kalamata and Sicilian olives with pickles; OB bakery rustic bread rolls, clarified butter and oregano; Burrata, pomegranate molasses, tomato and pepper ezme; and Antakya-style hummus, pine nuts and za’atar – absolutely delicious!

Then comes the lightly fried calamari with Isot chilli pepper plus the Murray cod fillet with charred scallion and lemon. With its crispy skin and flesh that flakes so perfectly, it doesn’t get much better than that! Also comes with a side of Charred baby gem lettuce, parsley aioli, parmigiano and sour cherry to complement the mouth-watering fish.

The experience is completed by the deconstructed baklava with toasted walnuts, hazelnut cream, and burnt orange – a sweet and crunchy treat to end your experience on a high and transport you straight to Istanbul for a brief moment.

With its delicious food, friendly staff and great Mediterranean vibes, Hamsi Taverna and its takeaway store (Hamsi Street) are a must-visit on your next trip to Sydney Fish Market.

Hamsi Street is currently open Wednesday to Sunday (10am to 5pm), while Hamsi Taverna is open from 11:30am to 10pm daily.
