4 Tips to Help You Sleep Better At Night

4 Tips to Help You Sleep Better At Night

Sleep is much more important than we sometimes realise. We know that we feel terrible when we haven’t slept for a while, but we might not know exactly what it’s doing to our body. Poor sleep can lead to headaches, high blood pressure, increased stress and irritability, cognitive decline, weight gain, a lowered immune system, and other issues.

But for something that can have such a big impact on our health, poor sleep is one of the most common health complaints among adults and even teenagers. So, what can we do about it? Here are a few suggestions.

1. Regular Sleeping Habits

Your body needs routine, especially when it comes to sleep. Sometimes the easiest solution is to just give your body what it needs. If you go to bed at the same time and get up at the same time every day, you allow your circadian rhythm to adjust to your sleeping routine.

As well as regular sleeping habits, try to come up with a before-bed routine to help you drift off. This might be to drink a certain tea or to have a relaxing bath before bed. Try to reduce screen time before you actually go to bed, ideally an hour before going to sleep. Scrolling your phone in bed can make it harder to go to sleep, but reading a book shortly before bedtime will help you relax.

2. Temperature Control

The temperature in your room can have a huge effect on how well you sleep. If you’re too cold, you might struggle to sleep, but most people have issues with the heat.

We generally like to be covered with a blanket in bed, but on a hot day, this can be our worst nightmare. So try to make the temperature in your room colder so you can be more comfortable. A fan or an air conditioning system is a good starting point, so set the thermostat to a lower temperature at night.

You might also want to invest in different quilts or blankets for different seasons, so you can be comfortable when it’s hot or cold. Don’t forget to turn your pillow around and take some water to bed.

3. How You Breathe

The way you breathe while you sleep can have an impact on your sleep quality. Ideally, you should breathe through your nose, but some people breathe through their mouth instead. This can be a sign of sleep apnea or an obstruction, but sometimes it’s just what our body chooses to do.

Using something like RhinoGear Nose Strips Nasal Strips mouth tape will keep your mouth closed at night, so you breathe through your nose instead.

4. Sleep Supplements

Sometimes you can do everything right but it’s still really difficult to get to sleep at night. You might need a bit of help to sleep well.

Herbal tea can be great for this. Chamomile or valerian root tea are commonly used to help people relax and sleep well. Or you can use supplements like melatonin for an extra boost. If you constantly have issues with sleep, it might be worth going to the doctor.
