Are you a Sydneysider looking to experience the true flavours of Thailand? Look no further as one of Sydney’s finest Thai restaurants, Riverside Thai, recently opened its doors in Pyrmont.
This hidden gem captures the true flavour of authentic luxury Thai cuisine in dishes that are rarely seen in Sydney. Husband and wife owners Paul and May have fused their knowledge and experience to create a traditional Thai menu with Asian and modern Australian influences. When Paul cooks, he doesn’t just serve food. He believes that the dishes he serves are all in the detail.
With quite an extensive food menu (over four pages), it can be tough to narrow the choices down but for an appetizer, we would highly recommend the Mieng Kham – grilled scallop with fresh betel leaf, lime, Spanish onion, peanut and ginger. This traditional Thai snack is nice and light so it won’t spoil your main – not to mention, absolutely delectable.
You also can’t go wrong with the delicious Salt & Pepper Squid with shallot and sriracha mayo. Crispy on the outside, soft and tender on the inside – it’s a must-try! If you’re feeling a little more daring, try the Grilled Octopus Salad featuring grilled baby octopus in garlic and lime dressing. This one is quite spicy so a tip: have plenty of water at the table in preparation.
It’s when you get to the mains that you realise just how unique these dishes are – you’d be hard pressed to find some of these in your regular Thai restaurants. While there are still a number of soups and curries available as well as standard fare such as Pad Thai, Pad See Ew, Thai Fried Rice, and Cashew Nut, the signature dishes are truly something else with options such as the popular (and hard to find) Kra Prow Squid, Fresh Salmon Tartar, Roasted Duck Salad, Wagyu Crying Tiger and the remarkable Pad Thai Lobster which seems to be the hero on the menu. Featuring pad thai noodle in egg net with half lobster served with bean, bean sprout and garlic chive, this is a truly visual feast that is just as delicious as it looks.
The Barramundi Fillet with Green Mango Salad is another in this category. An absolute mountain of a meal – the fried whole barramundi is completely loaded with green mango, lemon juice, chili, mint, shallot and Spanish onion. It’s edible food art at its best. The portions here are extremely generous so rest assured, you’ll be walking out of here with a full belly!
