A kilometre away from Newtown’s popular King Street precinct sits the Swanson Hotel. With a leafy outlook of Harry Noble Reserve and just down the road from the former Newtown Jets home ground of Erskineville Oval, the Swanson Hotel is a modern Australian venue where one can grab a drink and enjoy some delicious pub-grub to go along with it.
Pub food has come a long way in recent years and this is one such establishment where you will find pub food that matches restaurant quality. On our recent visit, we couldn’t resist trying a traditional pub classic – the chicken schnitzel. Coming with red cabbage slaw, chips and gravy, the schnitty was up to standard and as good as you would find in any pub across the city.
We then moved on to the Super Salad which consisted of chargrilled broccoli, spiced sweet potato, spinach, walnuts, lentils, pickled beetroot, goats cheese and lemon dressing. We licked the plate clean – delicious and one for the health conscious.
For something a little different, we sampled the Orange chicken with fennel, cashew, chilli, quinoa and pomegranate. This meal was to die for – and gluten-free, for those with an intolerance. This one was so good, we are already making plans to come back for seconds.
The menu also includes other pub favourites such as beer battered fish and chips and sirloin steak, a variety of burgers (which can also be purchased naked), tapas, and a mouth-watering selection of pizzas.
The Swanson Hotel is open Monday to Saturday (11am–midnight) and Sunday (11am–10pm). The Dining Room is open for lunch on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and for dinner seven days a week.
