Dutch Smuggler: Sydney’s Cult-Favourite Toastie Cafe Expands Its Cafe Empire
Sydney specialty coffee roaster and artisanal toastie cafe, Dutch Smuggler, is turning up the heat in the CBD with the launch of two new venues at 10 Bridge Street Sydney and 73 Miller Street North Sydney – Quay Quarter Tower (QQT).
Built on hospitality first, Dutch Smuggler is driven by a clear philosophy. “When I’m hiring, I’m not just looking for talent, I’m looking for someone who is hospitable,” says owner Alfred Agus, who took over the business in 2020.
The goal is simple: create a safe place where everyone feels welcome. By being authentic, generous and genuinely hospitable, the team builds connection beyond the counter.
While best known for their viral sensation the ‘Mie Goreng Toastie’ – a permanent menu fixture, coffee remains the powerhouse of the business. As a specialty coffee roaster focused on Indonesian beans, Dutch Smuggler follows a farm to cup philosophy, building direct relationships with farmers and importing, roasting and cupping in house. The aim is to showcase Indonesian coffee on the global stage alongside origins such as Ethiopia, Colombia and Brazil, while educating customers about its history and heritage.

On the food front, Dutch Smuggler continues to blur boundaries between Indonesian and Australian flavours. The Indo Mie Goreng Toastie, sits alongside a unique Beef Rendang toastie, a bold tribute to one of Southeast Asia’s most celebrated dishes. Kimchi toasties and sambal inspired egg creations round out a playful, curious and unapologetically flavour driven menu.
The new 10 Bridge Street location is a 25 seat dine in cafe and central kitchen, unlocking greater creative freedom and a broader menu offering beyond their famed toasties. Highlights include the delicious Avo Verde (avocado, cucumber, cherry tomato, feta, housemade pickled red onion, chilli flakes, dill, lime leaves oil), the Crunchy Ponzu Fritters (corn fritter, ponzu mayo glaze, sunny side up, deep fried kale, sesame oil, seeds, housemade pickled red onion) and the outstanding Crispy Ayam Goreng Panini (Indonesian crispy fried chicken, green apple salad, nahm jim sauce, roasted cashew, panini). Fried to golden perfection, this one comes dripping with heat and a delectable crunch. An absolute crowd-pleaser!

The new Quay Quarter Tower location conversely, will launch as a takeaway driven venue with a few outdoor seats, designed for the fast moving CBD crowd. It’ll be the perfect spot to pick up one of their classic toasties or get your coffee fix.
The expansion builds on the momentum of its Martin Place flagship, an eight seater, take-away focused venue and the busiest of the group’s six locations. Recognised at the Better Future Awards for architectural and interior design in collaboration with Inco Studio, the Martin Place store has cemented Dutch Smuggler as one of the city’s most distinctive coffee destinations.
Across every venue, from the eight seat Martin Place bar to the new openings, Dutch Smuggler remains committed to warmth, authenticity and craft. Specialty coffee. Artisanal toasties. A welcoming space. And now, even more room for Sydney to connect.
