Cafe Ventotto, Surry Hills
Cafe Ventotto is another fine café you will find on the southern end of trendy Surry Hills. This place will make you feel like you’re in a fancy French bistro once you step inside thanks to its mismatched vintage arm chairs, mosaic tables and typical Parisian rattan chairs. Adding to the European vibe is the hidden little back room decked out with European art for when you just want to escape the busy world outside.
Once you get comfortable, you’ll want to explore its delicious menu. With breakfast served all day, it’s a great spot for a late brunch any day of the week. The menu is literally Eggscellente (the first item on the list) with everything from freshly baked croissants with orange blossom ricotta and mascarpone cream with fresh strawberries (La Vita Bella) to Chia yoghurt with rosewater granola and passionfruit gel (White Eclipse).
For a winter favourite, The Golden Yearling will warm you up with slow-cooked yearling briskets, roasted baby potatoes, red beetroots, roasted almond flakes and broccolini on golden beetroot puree. Or if you like your smashed avocado, try the Avo Gone Nuts which adds crunchy chilli candied cashews for a slight twist along with shallots and a free-range poached egg with grilled lemon on sourdough / rye toasts. The unique addition works to great effect giving it the extra oomph to make this one a slam dunk treat.
The menu is a succinct mix of breakfast and lunch items, with the inclusion of classics and some more exciting dishes for good measure such as the Totto Bowl loaded with turmeric rice, sliced avocado, chilli broccolini, pickles, lemon and free-range poached egg on a pea puree. Down The Rabbit Hole is another thrilling option with heirloom carrots, haloumi, hazelnut crumbles and free-range poached eggs with carrot puree and salads with carrot tops salsa dressing on sourdough / rye toast. This is simply artwork on a plate that’s just as exhilarating to devour.
Wash it all down with some rare-to-Sydney Dimattina Coffee which is expertly made and uniquely presented in a jar. There’s also tea, smoothies and milkshakes to ensure you won’t walk out thirsty.
