Discover the Heart of Italy at Fortuna: Darlinghurst’s Culinary Gem

Fortuna, Darlinghurst’s latest culinary destination, opened its doors in December 2021, offering Sydneysiders an authentic taste of Italy with a unique twist. Co-owned by hospitality veterans Egon and Alessandra Marzaioli and George Nahas and helmed by Head Chef Yan Pfahler, Fortuna promises an extraordinary dining experience infused with passion and creativity.

Inspired by the belief that fortune is created, not given, Fortuna brings a unique ethos to Sydney’s vibrant food scene. “We create our fortune daily through pouring our heart into our incredible food, instead of relying on luck to guide us,” says Marzaioli.

With a love language rooted in Italian cuisine, Fortuna stands out not only for its exquisite dishes but also for its heartfelt approach to hospitality. “There’s something magical when our guests are happy and well-fed, a sentiment only those who cook with passion truly understand,” Marzaioli is originally from Caserta, Italy. He brings a wealth of experience from Michelin-starred restaurants like Quadri and Le Calandre. Alongside his business partner George Nahas, a Sydney native with multiple successful venues, including Italian inspired eatery, Bellucci, they have created a dining haven in Fortuna.

Executive Chef Yan Pfahler, a Swiss chef with a rich culinary background, leads the kitchen with precision and passion. His journey spans esteemed establishments in Switzerland and Australia, including Arte Bianca in Sydney, where he rose to prominence as head chef. Fortuna’s lively atmosphere truly sets it apart. The restaurant is bolstered by the popular karaoke nights that have quickly become a favourite among patrons. The blend of delicious food and entertainment creates an irresistible allure.

Fortuna’s interior is designed to offer a cosy yet vibrant dining experience. The venue features a warm, welcoming ambience. The rosy walls are adorned with mirrors, creating a warm atmosphere, while the bright exterior catches the eye. The standout feature is a stunning muralby Claudia Miranda, an acclaimed artist who also hosts the venue’s popular “Paint and Sip” sessions every Sunday from 6pm to 8pm.

Fortuna’s menu focuses on the essence of Italian cuisine – excellent pasta and pizza. Must-try dishes include the fresh, homemade pasta, especially the lamb ragù ($32) and Provolone ($32) torched at the table, a perpetual favourite. Another highlight is the maltagliati with truffle and mushrooms ($32), which has quickly become a crowd-pleaser. For a mid-week special, guests can enjoy 1.5 hours of pasta ($40 pp) featuring an authentic cucina popolare serving style.

The newly introduced leopard crust pizzas, featuring top-notch Italian ingredients, are a culinary revelation. The signature pizza is Diavola with spicy salami, mushrooms and Burrata ($29), which is not to be missed. Complementing the main dishes are delectable starters like in-house focaccia ($12) and classic salumi ($14-$18), alongside refreshing options like the cucumber and ricotta mint salad ($15) and truffle fries ($10).

Desserts are equally enticing, with the must-try tiramisu ($16) and the newly added cannolo ricotta pistachio and choco chips rounding off the meal ($12). For those looking to unwind with a drink, Fortuna offers a selection of inventive cocktails, including the Venice Martini and the Garibaldi ($18), as well as the popular bottomless Aperol Spritz ($18) available daily.

Having just launched their new pizza menu, Fortuna also offers an Unlimited Pasta Night every Thursday from 5pm (for $40pp, you can dive into a bottomless variety of authentic, mouth watering Italian pasta dishes for 1.5 hours or until you yell stop), a Bottomless Pizza Night every Friday from 5pm (unleash your appetite for 1.5 hours of unlimited Pizza and Vino) and a Bottomless Italian Festa every Friday from 2pm till 5.30pm & Saturday and Sunday from 12pm till 5.30pm (enjoy 2 hours of Bottomless Drinks and a Selection of Italian Signatures whilst singing your heart out, all for $99 per person). Check out the Fortuna website for more details on their offers.

Located in the heart of Darlinghurst, Fortuna is more than just a restaurant; it’s a celebration of Italian culture and cuisine. Whether you’re visiting for a hearty meal, a fun karaoke night, or a relaxing evening with friends, Fortuna offers an unforgettable experience filled with love and passion.
