JO LAWRY: Taking Pictures
Taking Pictures is the new album from Brooklyn-based Australian-born vocalist and songwriter Jo Lawry which has just been released through ABC Music/Universal.
Taking Pictures is the follow-up to 2008’s acclaimed I Want To Be Happy, which earned Jo sparkling reviews in The New York Times, Time Out New York and Downbeat Magazine – in which the album was described as “one of the best CDs of the 2000s”.
Featuring ‘Impossible’, a duet with Sting – with whom she has toured since 2009 as both backing vocalist and violin player – Taking Pictures sees the chanteuse step from jazz into a more guitar-based singer/songwriter sound. Recorded in New York and produced by Jo Lawry herself, along with Will Vinson (who also features on keyboards and saxophone), the 10-track recording ranges from the gorgeous, effortless sway of ‘Impossible’ to the multi-layered sweep of ‘Adelaide’ to the brittle and heartbreaking ‘I Said No’.
In 2013, Lawry was featured in the film 20 Feet From Stardom, which chronicled the lives of “the backup singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of the 21st century” and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature as well as being nominated for a BAFTA. Since 2009 she has collaborated and performed with Sting on both international tours and recordings.
This February, Jo returns to Australian shores for a string of headline shows, along with appearances at Sting & Paul Simon’s national ‘On Stage Together’ tour, including performances at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne and Sydney’s Qantas Credit Union Arena.
