Northies Chilli Fest Warms Up Winter
Cronulla’s beachside hangout Northies is spicing up Sydney this August with a month-long smokin’ fiesta in celebration of all things chilli.
The Northies Chilli Fest runs throughout August and sees the fiery little peppers making their way in to delicious dishes, zingy cocktails and an almighty chilli-eating competition every Sunday for those with a stomach of steel.
From 1 August, Northies launches its wicked-hot specials menu including Jalapeno Poppers, a scorching hot Chilli-Burger, Angry Wings or the Chilli-Roulette pizza – a thrilling sharer for mates who like living on the edge! Complementing each dish is the ‘Death Wagon’ – a cart stocked with 30 of the hottest sauces in the world. Diners are warned to approach the Death Wagon with caution…pitchers of water will be on hand to cool down fiery tasting sessions.
Things are heating up behind the bar too as Northies has a selection of chilli-infused vodkas to warm the winter days. Its mixologist has created two special cocktails, the stunning Blue Chilli Margarita or a good old fashioned Bloody Mary with a twist – you choose the Scoville rating (the measurement of how spicy the chilli is). Northies is also serving up Young Henry’s Tinnie’s with a Cayenne-salt rim adding a kick to the popular Newtowner, and for a dainty way to spice up spirits, bar staff can top traditional cocktails with fiery Chilli Fairy Floss.
The pinnacle of Northes’ Chilli Fest is its Chilli Eating Competition, held every August Sunday from 2pm in Old Joes bar. Entry is free and everyone is invited to get their chilli on, either by entering the competition or watching from the sidelines as contestants go head-to-head in the ultimate battle for the Chilli-Fiend Crown.
Northies promises to start small and sweet with its chillis eventually reaching up to the Carolina Reaper chilli which boasts a 2 million ranking on the Scoville heat scale. The Sunday events will feature sauce vendors, live artists, DJs and good times with prizes for all participants. Heats are held on Sunday 5, 12 and 19 August with the taste bud-blowing final held on Sunday 26 August. Ten participants per heat can enter, so get in quick by registering at northies.com.au/chilli-festival
