Realme 5 Smartphone Review
A relatively new smartphone brand that’s really shaking things up at the moment is realme. Said to be the fastest growing smartphone brand in the world, they have just launched four new smartphones in Australia. These include the realme XT (Australia’s first 64MP quad camera phone – RRP $499), realme 5 (RRP $299), realme 5 Pro (RRP $399) and the dual camera ‘$199 value king’ realme C2 (RRP $199).
With the launch of the four new Australian devices, the disruptive challenger brand is delivering on its promise to enable young people – including students and young professionals – to experience premium functionality, technology and style at a reasonable price. And after spending some time with the realme 5, we can confirm that they appear to be delivering on this promise.
The budget-friendly realme 5 delivers power and style, living up to its name with a whopping 5,000 mAh battery life that allows you to continuously play 30 hours of music, 21 hours of video, enjoy 49 hours of talk time and almost 30 days of screen-off stand-by. We spent an entire day active on the phone and there was plenty of juice left by the end of it – you could easily get two full days of normal usage without needing a single charge.
Another key feature is its AI Quad Camera set up – this might be the first at this price point. It features four individual lenses, each designed for a specific task. It includes an 8MP 119-degree ultra wide-angle lens, 12MP primary lens, 2MP portrait lens and 2MP macro lens, as well as a 13MP AI front camera. We got some pretty damn impressive results with the camera taking portraits, location shots and selfies – it really packs a punch for a budget smartphone.
We’re big fans of phones that include a fingerprint sensor and realme conveniently includes one on the back allowing you to unlock the screen speedily without entering your pin every time. The phone also features a 6.5 inch HD+ Mini-drop full screen display, giving a larger field of view for an excellent gaming, audio and video experience. The diamond-cut design has been enhanced with holographic colour and reflective texture.
The realme 5 is powered by a 2.0GHz Octa Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor coupled with up to 4GB RAM and 128GB storage. We certainly got decent performance out of it with multiple windows open at the same time. Also noteworthy is that it features a Dual SIM – one for business, one for pleasure!? Or if you won’t be using a second SIM, you can stick a microSD card inside and increase your storage…winning!
We’re also glad to see the realme 5 comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack – something a lot of newer phones have foolishly ditched. This means you can plug in your headphones and listen to your favourite tunes rather than going the Bluetooth route. It also means you can use your phone as an MP3 player – the sound was phenomenal when we hooked it up to our amplifier and pumped up the tunes all day.
