The Aussie drinks order is changing, and tequila, Japanese whisky and alcohol-free cocktails are leading the charge

New figures suggest Australians are becoming more adventurous drinkers, swapping familiar favourites for premium spirits, cocktail culture and sophisticated non-alcoholic alternatives.

Remember when ordering a drink was as simple as asking for your usual? According to new figures from Amber Beverage Australia, those days may be fading fast.

The distributor’s latest results suggest Australians are becoming increasingly curious about what they’re drinking, embracing premium spirits, globally inspired brands and elevated non-alcoholic options in place of more traditional go-to orders.

Among the categories gaining momentum are tequila, Japanese whisky and alcohol-free spirits, reflecting a broader shift towards more considered drinking occasions and a growing appetite for drinks with a story behind them.

It’s a trend hospitality venues have been quietly watching for some time. Whether it’s ordering a premium tequila over a standard pour, swapping a beer for a crafted non-alcoholic cocktail or exploring lesser-known international labels, Australians appear increasingly willing to experiment.

“Australians aren’t just buying a drink anymore, they’re buying into a brand and a cultural moment,” says Uliana Linenko, Managing Director of Amber Beverage Australia.

“They’re more curious, more considered, and more willing to explore different categories than ever before. What we’re seeing is a consumer who wants a more intentional experience, whether that’s a premium spirit, a cocktail occasion or a sophisticated alcohol-free option.”

The data points to strong growth across several premium and emerging categories during the first quarter of 2026, including heritage bourbon, premium spirits and non-alcoholic alternatives. Tequila continues to be one of the standout performers, reflecting its evolution from a party staple to a category increasingly associated with premium sipping and cocktail culture.

The rise of alcohol-free options is also showing no signs of slowing. As more Australians look to moderate their drinking without sacrificing the social experience, premium non-alcoholic brands are becoming a permanent fixture on drinks menus and in home bars alike.

Taken together, the figures paint a picture of an Australian drinks culture that is becoming more adventurous, globally influenced and experience-led than ever before.
