As the son of John and Grace Middleton (John Simm and Maxine Peake) Bert has a unique perspective on a world of bloom and bust, the dawn of motor cars and the Charleston, as the roaring twenties explode with energy, freedom and optimism. In the outside world barriers are being broken down and change comes at a terrific pace, and The Village is thrown headlong into modernity.
