Ash London Q&A
How did you get your start in the industry?
I started out writing for radio – very much behind the scenes. The cool part was that I got to interview some of the biggest artists in the world – but the secret dream was to always work in TV.
Best part of what you do?
I get to work with one of my best mates, my co-host Scott Tweedie. It means that work never feels like work and we’re always having a laugh.
And the worst part?
Sometimes when taping the show it’s easy to get stuck on one word or phrase. Once you stuff it up – your brain shuts off and you lose the ability to cohesively string a sentence together. Which is in essence what I get paid to do. So that can be awkward.
Any interesting experiences you can share of your time on The Loop?
I once had an interview with an Aussie pop star who shall remain nameless. It was only going to be a 10 minute interview so I drove into the city and parked. He ended up being so late that I paid $93 in parking. But when he did rock up, he was an absolute darling so all is forgiven.
Favourite album of all time and why?
‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ by Simon and Garfunkel. 11 of my all-time favourite songs in one place. The lyrics, the harmonies, and Paul Simon’s incredible storytelling.
Best live performance that you’ve ever seen?
Oooooh an almost impossible question to answer. I saw Ray LaMontagne play at Royal Albert Hall – he hardly spoke a word but delivered one of the most haunting, romantic performances I’ve ever encountered. I also recently saw Beyonce – who absolutely blew my mind.
Favourite bars/clubs/pubs to hang out in?
We often find ourselves at Forresters in Surry Hills for Friday drinks. The boys at The Wild Rover do some wonderful things with rum, but I can’t go past my local – The Maroubra Sands. Cheap food, colourful characters, and you can even play some KENO.
Take us through a typical day in the life of …
My life has no real routine as my schedule is here there and everywhere – but my day will usually include morning exercise, a good coffee, an hour or two of scripting, some baking (my hobby), filming, and the beach – which is in my opinion the very best way to start or end the day.
