When dynamic duo Brendan Lloyd and Sonia Stanojevic opened the doors of their eclectic East Sydney venue, Food Society, back in 2011, they didn’t really give too much thought to where they’d be in five years time.
The pair had already been in business together for five years, operating a successful catering business, The Catering Department, and it was their dream to open a restaurant from which they could share their love of food, vodka and entertaining with the broader community in a place that felt like home. Or was it their grandmother’s home…?
Often described as feeling like you’re walking into your “grandmothers living room” the moody space was filled with treasures, and dim lit tables in nooks and crannies. Five years on and all grown up, the venue has undergone a transformation and could now be better described as their “grandmother’s beach house” having lightened and brightened the basement space in a hip little corner of Riley Street, while maintaining the promise of clever modern European food.
With arguably Australia’s largest range of Vodka’s on pour (many house infused in a huge array of flavours), and a hot new young chef (Marcel Osato formerly of Sugar Room and Merivale), Food Society ticks the box for many occasions be it after work drinks, an intimate dinner, a night with a group of friends, a Saturday afternoon Vodka High Tea or is available for exclusive use for corporate or private parties and events.
Perhaps best described as having a Modern European sharing menu, specialty European dumplings, creative cocktails and top-shelf vodkas in a rustic-chic spot, Food Society is here for the long haul.
Food Society is open Thursday to Saturday from 6pm until late. Sunday to Wednesday – available for groups and exclusive bookings. For reservations, contact Food Society on 02 8090 3462, email [email protected] or make an online booking through www.foodsociety.com.au.
