Mikel Coffee, Five Dock
A leading Greek Coffee brand has recently opened its first store in Australia. Mikel Coffee is a giant chain in Greece with almost 200 stores there as well as stores in the UK, United States, Bulgaria, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Cyprus…and now in Sydney’s Five Dock. With a motto like, Maybe It’s Knowledge Entering Life, you know that MIKEL mean serious business and they’re certainly serious about their coffee.
With over 40 different signature coffees on the menu, you’ll need to make yourself a regular to get through the lot! Mikel’s signature Freddo Cappuccino – Greece’s version of an iced coffee blended in a frappe coffee frother and topped with a layer of cold milk foam – tops the list of recommendations. But you’ll need to come in and try some for yourself. With such huge variety, you can’t go wrong whatever you choose to have.
Foodies are also in for a treat as the menu is full of Greek inspired creations – a homage to the chain’s birthplace. For breakfast, try a traditional Spanakopita with spinach, feta cheese encased in a flaky golden filo pastry or go for a Bougatsa which sees custard encased in golden buttery filo – very sweet! For something heavier, try the Greek omelette with cherry tomatoes, Spanish onion, Kalamata olives and feta (imported specially from Greece) with locally sourced sourdough.
If you prefer a more familiar classic, try the golden Brioche French Toast with banana, strawberries, fairy floss and vanilla ice-cream with a good lashing of maple syrup. Or the Acai Bowl which never disappoints with acai berry, banana, coconut flakes, granola, chia seeds, passionfruit, kiwi and mixed berries. It certainly left us feeling refreshed and satisfied after devouring one.
If you’re coming for lunch or dinner, try Yiayia’s Pastitsio – a Greek traditional plate with rich Bolognese sauce, topped with creamy béchamel over layers of pasta. Or a traditional souvlaki with your choice of marinated lamb, pork or chicken skewers served with salad, chips, either tzatziki or chilli feta dip and warm pita bread to mop your plate clean. If you like your fish, the Grilled Barramundi is a standout with potato mash, roasted vegetables, glaze and sweet potato ribbons. Super delicious and our top pick of the day!
With sandwiches and burgers, pasta, salads and other sweet temptations available, there is plenty here to satisfy all palettes. To wash it all down there is coffee galore, tea, milkshakes, juices, soft drinks and even wine and beer. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, head to Mikel Coffee for a Greek inspired treat or to experience some of their amazing signature coffee.
