Printz Board, the Grammy Award-winning writer/producer for The Black Eyed Peas and Musical Director for Cee Lo Green and Macy Gray tours, is about to release his debut EP, Pre Games. Printz Board took some time out to chat with Sydney Unleashed in the lead up to the 28th April release.
How did you get your start in the music industry?
I moved to Hollywood with a loaf of bread, a package of deli meat and a tank full of gas. I took my trumpet around and sat in with as many bands as I could. At the end of that weekend, I began to garner some attention.
Best part of what you do?
The best part is creating something out of thin air, and having little kids, all the way to adults, get touched by it.
And the worst part?
The worst part is that it’s so difficult to stay afloat now, with technology and sharing. You put months and months into something that people can pick apart in 15 seconds. And not be able to pay your rent.
Any interesting experiences you can share?
I’ve got loads of experiences! Just recently I did a show with Macy Gray, and I got my first sign (as a solo artist) in the crowd!
Favourite album of all time and why?
My favourite album has to be The E.N.D. (Black Eyed Peas). It just changed so much for me. Favourite album by someone else…probably that Lenny (Kravitz) album with “American Woman” on it.
Best live performance that you’ve ever seen?
Love, Love, Love – Stone Temple Pilots, Kid Rock, Kid Mac, Kanye …so many.
Take us through a typical day in the life of Printz Board.
Morning – oatmeal
live music at a venue, or a club – researching hot shit…
pink berry at midnight
game of thrones at 1am
What advice would you give to someone looking at getting involved in the music industry?
I’d tell anyone getting into the industry to make sure they have thick skin, never have a Plan B, stay current and keep it simple. Oh, and good luck!!!
